Like any good (and legal) non-profit, we have a mission–a vision that draws us together and unites us, that informs every aspect of the organization from its structure to its policies. A performing arts organization’s season is a glimpse into that mission, a reflection of the artistic director’s overarching vision for the organization.
During the planning stage, we asked ourselves (and each other) some key questions about the shows to ensure that we are producing intentional, mission-driven theatre:
October 18-27
By Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is a short play by Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood where the women of The Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein are stuck in a shelter after an atomic explosion in their town. Realizing they are the last people on Earth, they are finally able to live openly as lesbians instead of the widows they’ve been pretending to be. For a comedy, this play has an incredible amount of heart and through a fun, campy lens we are introduced to themes of loneliness, friendship, sisterhood, and of course the “magical, magnificent, egg.”
November 7-17
By Shawntai Brown
eLLe: Kalamazoo by Shawntai Brown is part of a rolling episodic that Queer Theatre Kalamazoo has been proud to present year after year as part of our season, and this year is no different! What makes it even better? This year’s eLLe is presented in collaboration with our friends at FaceOff Theatre Company! We’re eager and excited to see what this year’s eLLe will hold.
March 20-29
By Siena Marilyn Ledger
In an oncology unit waiting room over games of Go Fish, a transgender man, Aaron, and a young girl, Luna, share with each other their dreams and fears, their humor, and their heart. In this new work, Chicago playwright Siena Ledger takes us on a journey through the solar system without even leaving the theatre. With spot on dialogue and smart characterization, Ledger helps us all grapple with our place within it all.
June 19-28
By Qui Nguyen
When Agnes stumbles on her late sister Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons notebook, she gets more than she rolled for in Qui Nguyen’s imaginative journey, She Kills Monsters. With plenty of sword fights and homicidal fairies, She Kills Monsters is a hilarious and fantastical marathon that explores isolation, imagination, and the warrior in all of us.
