Director's Digest

This is my favorite American play, tied with King Lear for favorite play period. Centered as it is around a heterosexual couple, Fool for Love may seem an odd choice for Queer Theatre Kalamazoo; however, it arguably fits within the definition of queer, and it’s “metaphorically queer” for certain. In both cases, the play brings to the table great candor, empathy, and understanding. As we watch this oddly endearing pair of ornery innocents go at each other, we’re reminded just how serious and complicated adult love can get. How much is at stake. How vulnerable, by definition, “lovers” are; how easily they can hurt each other, without

wanting or trying to; and how difficult yet vital it is to do one’s utmost to prevent that harm. Fool for Love is also the best example of Sam Shepard’s most breathtaking and influential dramatic innovation, namely: so-called “rock ‘n’ roll theatre.” On top of all that, many moments are downright hilarious! For me, as for countless other writers and actors, Shepard’s been a super-seminal influence. In view of the fact that this is his Diamond Jubilee yearand given the dire need to combat ALS, and the chance to work with and support QTKhow could we not take our touring project to Kalamazoo?

Paul McComas, Director

Great entertainment for a great cause. Queer Theatre Kalamazoo was established to utilize theatre as a way to reach and move communities through performance. We are proud to team up with another group out of Chicago who is doing just that. We will be hosting a fundraiser performance by Paul McComas and Amee Binder, an adaptation of Fool for Love by Sam Shepard, as directed by Paul McComas. All funds raised will be split between the ALS Association and Queer Theatre Kalamazoo.
